What is the big deal about Meditation and Mindfulness?

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.”
- Anonymous

I used to live in my head most of the time: rushing from one thing to the next, juggling responsibilities, worrying about the future, replaying the past, rarely pausing to just be. Life felt like an endless to-do list. I didn’t realise how disconnected I was from myself until I began exploring meditation and mindfulness through yoga and breathwork.

Learning to slow down and tune into the present changed everything for me. I learned that peace doesn’t come from trying to fixing everything around me, but rather learning to be present, observant and non judgemental of what was happening inside and around me, and letting it be without judgement.

That shift from being swept up in my mind to actually being here, now is at the heart of what I share in my EmpowerMe Now classes.

So, what exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is simply the practice of paying attention to this moment, with kindness and curiosity. It’s about noticing your breath, your body, your feelings, your environment and meeting it all as it is, without needing to fix or fight it.

It’s not about emptying your mind or stopping your thoughts. It’s about noticing what’s happening and choosing not to get caught up in it.

And what about meditation?

Meditation is a practice, a time you set aside to sit (or lie down), be still, and train your mind to focus. It often uses tools like:

  • mindful movement (Asana)

  • the breath (Pranayama),

  • internal focus, sensory and body awareness (Pratyahara) to help relieve you of external distractions and anchor your attention inward.

  • chanting mantra silently or aloud or candle meditation to assist in ignoring internal disruptions (Dharana) to focus attention on one point.

  • observing thoughts without judgement to help quieten the mind and find stillness. (Dhyana)

Think of meditation like going to the gym for your mind. You’re strengthening your ability to be present.

How mindfulness and meditation connect?

Here’s the simple way to explain it:

  • Mindfulness is a way of being - you can practise it anytime, anywhere, whether you’re washing dishes, walking, or talking to a loved one.

  • Meditation is a formal practice - you sit or lie down and intentionally practise mindfulness (or other techniques) in a more structured way.

So, you could say mindfulness is the quality of awareness, and meditation is one of the ways we develop that quality. They feed each other. Meditation helps you grow mindfulness, and mindfulness makes meditation easier and richer.

Why this matters?

Life moves fast. Between work, family, relationships, and the constant pull of technology, many of us live in “do mode.” And when we do stop, our minds often don’t, looping on worries about tomorrow or regrets from yesterday.

When I was in a season of deep stress and emotional upheaval, practising meditation helped me breathe through difficult feelings instead of being overwhelmed by them. It taught me how to be more mindful, savour and be grateful for the small joys like a warm cup of tea, the sound of birds outside, the feeling of my dogs curled up beside me.

Over the years, both research and my own lived experience have shown me just how powerful this practice is:

  • In relationships. Being present with someone creates deeper connection. You listen more, react less, and cultivate appreciation instead of judgement. It also cultivates self compassion and self love in your relationship with yourself.

  • With stress, anxiety, and depression. Being mindful interrupts the spiral of negative thoughts. Instead of being dragged into “what ifs” and “should haves,” you return to presence and calm.

  • For focus and clarity. Training your attention on the present strengthens concentration. Even a few mindful breaths can clear mental fog and help you reset.

  • For physical health. Practising mindfulness and meditation isn’t only about the mind. It can improve sleep, lower blood pressure, ease pain, and help your body relax and restore.

How we practise in Empower Me Now

In my classes, mindfulness is woven into everything we do. You’ll find it in:

  • Movement - Yoga and Pilates sequences where we focus on breath, alignment, and body awareness rather than rushing through poses.

  • Breathwork and meditation - Practices that calm the nervous system and bring you back into balance.

  • Body scans and sensory awareness - Simple tools to reconnect with your body and ground yourself in the here and now.

  • Everyday presence - Learning to take mindfulness off the mat and into your daily life, whether that’s walking, cooking, working or spending time with loved ones.

You don’t need hours of silence or a retreat in the mountains to practise mindfulness and meditation. You can start right now with your breath, your body and this moment.

At EmpowerMe Now, I’ll guide you through mindful movement, meditation, and breath practices that strengthen your “mindful muscle.” With time, you’ll find yourself calmer, clearer, and more connected, able to meet life’s challenges with grace and to savour its simple joys more fully.

Come join me in class here and let’s explore the power of presence together.
